Yuba City is a Northern California city, founded in 1849. It is the
county seat of Sutter County , California , United States . The
population was 64,925 at the 2010census.
Yuba City is the principal city of the Yuba City Metropolitan
Statistical Area which encompasses all of Sutter County and Yuba
County . The metro area's population is 164,138. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] It is the
21st largest metropolitan area in California ranked behind Redding and
Chico . Its metropolitan statistical area is part of the Greater
Sacramento CSA .
The unemployment rate in the Yuba City MSA was 14.9 percent in
September 2012, down from a revised 15.8 percent in August 2012, and
below the year-ago estimate of 16.4 percent. This compares with an
unadjusted unemployment rate of 9.7 percent for California and 7.6
percent for the nation during the same period. The unemployment rate
was 14.0 percent in Sutter County, and 16.3 percent in Yuba County.
Yuba City is known for its sizeable Sikh community. The Sikh populationin the

It is that time of year when everyone in this country remembersIndira
Gandhi and her terrible death. On the morning of her deathanniversary
every newspaper that I read carried huge pictures of her along with
things she had said like,"A nation's strength ultimately consists of
what it can do on its own and not in what it can borrow from others."
And, "Secularism anddemocracy are the twin pillars of our state, the
very foundations of our society." These were mostly advertisements
issued by different Government departments but it wasnot just the
Government that made a big effort to commemorate 'Martyrdom Day'.
Television channels produced long documentaries on Indira's life
filledwith bathos and pathos. They appeared to have been made with the
purpose of reminding us that she was a great leader whose life was
tragically cut short by the perfidy of her Sikh bodyguards.
None of the documentaries recounted the horror that followed her
assassination. Nor did the newspapers pay more than cursory attention
to the massacre of more than 3,000 Sikhs in Delhi alone, asthe price
that the Congress Government, led by her son, extracted for her death.
If they didit was only in passing reference to 'riots' that some
described as 'anti-Sikh' without pointing out that what happened were
not riots but a pogrom carried out by the state against innocent
citizens. These pogroms were later justified by the Prime Minister
himself. It is possible that Rajiv Gandhi made his"big tree falls, the
earth shakes" speech because he knew that the mood of the country was
filled withbloodlust and a desire to teach the Sikhs a lesson.
Certainly, his stupendous victory in the general election that
followed proved this. But, it is important to remember what happened,
important to remember it every year just as we remember Indira Gandhi
because what happened in the first week of November 1984 was India's
first state-sponsored slaughter. In Gujarat in February 2002 there
were at least a few spontaneous riots in which Hindus were killed.
Inthe violence that followed Indira Gandhi's assassination, not a
single Hindu was killed. So the word 'riot', when used to describe the
violence, is a lie.
As someone who was witness to the carnage in Delhi, I find it hard not
to remember what happened without feeling the same sense of horror
that I felt when the first mob surrounded my car outside Ashoka Hotel
on November 1, 1984.
No country that aspires to being governed by the rule of law should
ever allow barbarism to be unleashed, no matter what the provocation.
