Strong earthquake close to Mindanao, Philippines
We are seeing at this moment a serious increase in number of visitors
from the Philippines.
When you have felt an earthquake, please let us know by filling in the
form below
The earthquakes epicenter is off the coast which will weaken the
shaking considerably.
Update : The epicenter locations provided by different agencies are
far to uncertain to give a danger estimate.
Update : the depth of this earthquake is currently reported as40 to 60
km which is very good news. At the other hand, USGS reports an
epicenter at only 8 km from Burgos and a Magnitude of 6.4, a lot more
than the other agencies.
Update : The depth is more or less confirmed by the I Have Felt It
reports we have received from within Mindanao. Most of them indicate a
very weak shaking which is typical for deeper earthquakes.
Update : Strange enough, Phivolcs the local seismological data
provider has not yet reported this earthquake.
Update 18:59 UTC : EMSC has nowchanged his measured Magnitude to M5.8
at a depth of 60 km. Additionally EMSC puts the epicenter location at
a bigger distance from the coast than USGS. 3 favorable parameters, if
true, probably avoiding serious damage. Secondary damage by landslides
are always a possibility at the Philippines.
Update 19:02 UTC : USGS predicts, based on his own higher numbers,
that the max. shaking will be a V MMI (moderate shaking). Based on
what we receivefrom within the Philippines by our readers, and still
lacking data fromPhivolcs, we tend to believe the EMSC numbers more
than those from USGS.
Update 19:10 UTC : Good news from Phivolcs, Philippines (to be trusted
as local seismological agency) : Magnitude M5.8 – Depth: 99 km. These
numbers are equalling what we have received astestimonies from within
the Philippines. Based on these numbers, it would really surprise
usthat damage would be inflicted. Based on the Phivolcs numbers,
themap below should be coloured light blue entirely.
Update 19:20 UTC : Closest city to the epicenter : Tandag City, a city
with 44,327 inhabitants.
Update 19:59 UTC : People at Tandag City (city closest to the
epicenter following Phivolcs) are reporting a MMI VI, rather strong
shaking.
Update 20:13 UTC : Phivolcs has updated his earthquake report in the
very bad direction. The Magnitude has been increased fromMw5.7 to
Mw6.5, a HUGE difference. The depth from 99 km to 75 km. Phivolcs is
expecting damage and aftershocks !
Update 22:56 UTC : Strange situation at the Philippines. USGS
decreased his earthquake values from M6.4 to M6.1 while local Phivolcs
increased the Magnitude from M5.7 to M6.5. Same happened with the
depth.
The power in Tandag was ruptured for a couple of hours but is restored now.
We will have to wait until the morning hours before (currently night
in the Philippines) until we will have a report about eventual damage.

Extra Amtrak Cascades service added to accommodate more Thanksgiving travelers
To give Thanksgiving holiday travelers another way to get around
during this busy travel season, Amtrak Cascades will run 11 additional
train trips between Portland and Seattle. The additional trains are
very popular, averaging 2400 additional riders each year since 2009.
Expanded Thanksgiving service will operate Wednesday, Nov. 21, through
Sunday, Nov. 25. For a third year, passengers can ride an Amtrak
Cascades Thanksgiving Eve Express which leaves Portland at one minute
before midnight and arrives in Seattle at 4:14 a.m. on Thanksgiving.

Work underway to increase Amtrak Cascades train speeds between
Vancouver and Kalama
BNSF Railway crews have begun work replacing worn steel railroad track
between Vancouver and Kalama in southwest Washington. Some portions of
track through this area, installed in the late 1960s for slow-moving
freight trains, require passenger trains traveling at higher speeds to
slow down. This work is part of a $92 million, multi-phase rail
improvement project that will improve track quality, durability and
passenger ride and comfort by upgrading tracks between Nisqually and
the Columbia River. The track upgrades will allow Amtrak Cascades to
run at top speeds more often, leading to faster and more reliable
service. The overall project will be complete in 2016, but track
replacement work through this area is expected to wrap up before
Thanksgiving.

Amtrak Cascades schedules adjusted during construction
Those riding Amtrak Cascades trains between Seattle and Portland in
November may need to add 15 to 45 minutes to their schedule while
crews replace track between Vancouver and Kalama in southwest
Washington. Train schedules are unaffected for those riding south of
Portland and north of Seattle. To help people make train connections
during the construction, an additional bus will be added to the
Seattle - Bellingham route with scheduled times between noon and

Rail construction work starts in November to remove rail bottleneck
through Everett Rail Yard
Freight trains switching tracks at BNSF's rail yard in Everett
frequently cause delays to Amtrak Cascades passenger trains passing
through. BNSF crews will start work in November to add two new tracks
long enough to hold a 7,000 foot freight train so passenger trains can
avoid getting stopped by freight trains blocking the tracks. The $3.5
million Everett Storage Track project is expected to wrap up by the
end of this year.

Public reviews proposal to reroute Amtrak Cascades to improve on time
performance
Community members interested in the Point Defiance Bypass project
attended two public meetings hosted by WSDOT and provided comments on
the recently released Environmental Assessment. Guests at the meetings
engaged with the project team asking detailed questions about study
findings and next steps in the process. Comments were mixed, ranging
from concerns about trains causing traffic backups and disrupting
emergency services, to enthusiasm about the growing Amtrak Cascades
service. The public hearing in DuPont attracted the most interest,
with more than 50 people signed in. The public review period ends Nov.
9, 2012. FRA will consider the comments prior to issuing a decision,
expected near the end of 2012.

Valuable input provided at state rail plan workshops
More than 100 people attended state rail plan workshops held in
Spokane and Seattle. Participants provided feedback to help shape the
vision, goals and objectives for the future of rail in Washington
state. Attendees interested in freight and passenger rail shared their
concerns and expressed their priorities for public investment in the
rail system. Participants shared concerns and priorities on a wide
variety of topics including freight mobility, safety, future funding,
maintenance and preservation. The workshops are one of many
opportunities for public input throughout the project, with WSDOT
hosting an additional Seattle workshop in early November.

Train Performance
Amtrak Cascades on-time performance for October 2012 averaged
approximately 78 percent, slightly lower than the September average of
79.6 percent.
