How to Tell If Your Water Snail Is Dead

Mystery snails are more commonly known as apple snails and are aquatic
pets found in freshwater aquariums. They are generally hardysnails
that can often survive in poorquality environments, but are prone to
sudden death from disease or oldage like any other pet. Identifying a
dead mystery snail can be difficult because the animals will sometimes
float on the surface or be inactive for days on end. You will need a
little patience and a keen sense of smell to tell if your snail is
dead after a week or so of inactivity.

Instructions
1.
Remove the snail from the water. Locate the opening near the body of
the shell. Smell the shell carefully. If the shell smells rotten or
foul (Like vomit), the snail has died.
2.
Examine the water snail shell carefully. If the body of the snail is
no longer inside the shell or if the snail hangs out of the shell and
does not move, then the snailmay have died.
3.
Locate the trapdoor on the snail'sbody. The opening will remain shut
when the snail remains alive,but it will remain open when the snail
dies.
4.
Hold the snail shell in front of a light source such as a flashlight.
Look at the heartbeat to determine if the snail remains alive. You can
only see the heartbeat in young and thin-shelled snails.
Tips & Warnings
*. Remove dead snails from the water immediately and discard them.
*. Never remove snails from the water for an extended period because
they will die when all themoisture dries.
