DIVISION RACES INTENSIFY IN SECOND HALF
Soriano
Rafael Soriano (24 saves) has filled in nicely for injured Yankees closer Mariano Rivera.
The second half of the season is under way, and the excitement continues to build. The Yankees have fought their way to the biggest divisional lead in baseball, and Rafael Soriano -- who has become the closer in the absence of Mariano Rivera -- has been a huge factor. Texas remains atop the American League West behind one of the league's most relentless batting orders, and the White Sox own a 2 ½-game lead over Detroit in the AL Central. Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are engaged in baseball's closest division race in the National League Central, with the Pirates trying to reach the playoffs for the first time since 1992. The Nationals, powered by Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper, lead the NL East, and the Dodgers -- who led the NL West for most of the first half -- have fallen three games behind the Giants.
