hydrologic outlook
national weather service jackson ms
1100 am cdt mon mar 19 2012
... heavy rainfall event west of interstate 55 late tuesday through
friday...
a very large ... slow moving low pressure center will track eastward
across the lower mississippi river valley over the next five days.
scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible across western
sections of the hydrologic service area which includes southeast
arkansas ... northeast louisiana ... and the yazoo delta region of
mississippi on tuesday. widespread heavy rainfall will enter these
western areas late tuesday and will slowly spread eastward across
the area through friday morning.
rainfall totals from 3 to 5 inches with locally heavier amounts
possible will occur west of interstate 55 from late tuesday into
thursday. flash flooding will be the primary concern across this
area. rainfall rates could be excessive. bayou bartholomew.. bayou
boeuf ... bayou macon ... and the tensas river could see significant
rises with the heavy rainfall. smallerbayous could overflow their
banks.
for those parishes and counties along the ouachita and saline
rivers.. heavy rainfall in excess of 10 inches is expected across
southwest arkansas. the runoff from this heavy rainfall will cause
significant flooding along the upper reaches of these river systems.
this could lead to flooding this weekend into next week along the
western borders of ashley county in arkansas and moorehouse parish in
louisiana.
the middle and lower arkansas river in arkansas and oklahoma will see
rainfall totals in excess of 10 inches. the white river system in
arkansas will see 6 to 10 inches. this could produce rises along the
lower mississippi river next week.
for areas east of interstate 55 ... heavy rainfall from 2 to 3 inches
with locally heavier amounts are possible from wednesday night into
friday. this area will need to be watched as the system could slow
as the upper low pressure center pivots back to the southeast. flash
flooding could be a problem throughout the region. minor to moderate
flooding could occur along rivers across central and north
mississippi
a flood watch may need to be issuedon tuesday for areas west of
interstate 55.
