Pacific Gas and Electric Co. wants to give large industrial users rate
reductions in an effort to promote economic development in California.
The rates would target companies with power loads of200 kilowatts or
more, providing a 12 percent discountfor five years, or 35 percent
reduction for five years in areaswith high unemployment — 25 percent
above the state average.
As it stands today, Shasta, Tehama, Trinity and Siskiyou counties
would qualify for the higher discount.
PG&E has asked the California Public Utilities Commission for a
decision on its proposal by March 2013.
"We can't predict the future, butcurrently it appears businesses in
Shasta County would be eligible for the enhanced reduction," PG&E
spokesman Jonathan Marshall said Wednesday.
The program would be available to companies that avow they need the
cost break to expand, build a new plant, orstay in California. It also
would be available to an out-of-state company relocating or expanding
into California.
"The program is not designed to lure a company from Trinity County to
Shasta County," Marshall said.
There are 31 PG&E customers in Shasta County that have a capacity of
200 kilowatts or larger — 18 of them are industrial, six are retail
and hospitality firms, five are educational institutions, one is
agovernment entity and one is a medical facility.
"We are looking at a variety of ways we can help promote economic
development in our service areas," Marshall said."We are deeply
embedded in the communities we serve; we have a common stake to -
