WELLINGTON, Colo. -- A 650-acregrass fire was 90 percent contained in
rural, northern Larimer County on Sunday afternoon.
The fire, which was reported about12 p.m. near Vesta Lane and County
Road 9, was still under investigation "but appears to be human
caused," Larimer County sheriff's spokesman John Schulz said. He added
that investigators were not releasing details on how someone may have
started the fire.
About 1:30 p.m., emergency telephone notifications were sent to about
63 homes advising residents within a two-mile radius of the fire to be
ready to evacuate, Schulz said. But no evacuations were necessary.
Initially, wind caused the midday fire to rapidly spread in dry
pasture land northwest of Wellington, said sheriff's ExecutiveOfficer
Nick Christensen.
But the grass fire "burned itself out pretty quickly," he said. The
fire didn't jump surrounding roads.
"No structures are threatened at this point, other than one shed
which, was partially burned," he said.
Firefighters were mopping up hot spots by 3:30 p.m.
The fire was fought by the Wellington Fire Department, sheriff's
firefighters and the Poudre Fire Authority
