Flemish minister for Public WorksHilde Crevits CD&V and her
Dutchcounterpart Melanie Schultz van Haegen signed an agreement
yesterday for the construction of anew sea lock in Terneuzen in the
Netherlands. The new lock is intended to secure easy passage for
inland shipping between the Netherlands, Belgium and France and
improve access to the port ofGhent. The agreement means that the
studies and assessments can get off the ground, with the tenderset to
launch in 2015 and the first ship due to navigate through the lock in
2021, says the Dutch minister. Flanders and the Netherlands have spent
years negotiating on the matter. The complex of locks in Terneuzen is
in Dutch territory, but it primarily serves the port of Ghent through
the Ghent-Terneuzen canal. The absence of a larger sea lock has
prevented large maritime shippingfrom using the harbour.
