Michael Jackson Song FilesStolen From Label By Hackers
By Emily Zemler • 1 day ago Breaking News
This is truly a modern day theft: Hackers stole more than 50,000 music
files from Sony Music, including Michael Jackson 's entire back
catalog and many unreleasedsongs from the pop star.
The theft reportedly took place in April of last year. You may
remember that hackers attacked Sony's PlayStation Network and stole
the personal data of 77 million registered users. Well, apparently
during that attack 50,000 music files were also stolen– something that
was not discovered by Sony until several weeks later. Sony has
confirmed the news to the BBC , who notes that Sony Music paid $250
million Jackson's estate for a seven-year deal for the rights to his
remainingsongs. This is said to include unheard duets with Black Eyed
Peas will.i.am and late Queen singer Freddie Mercury.
Sony Music Entertainment spokeswoman Liz Young confirmed that the
company became aware of the problem in May, noting they "immediately
tooksteps to secure the site and notify authorities. As a result, the
two suspects were arrested." Those twosuspects are James Marks, 26,
andJames McCormick, 25, both from the U.K. The men were arrested last
May and are due to stand trial in January 2013. The men appeared in
court last week and denied the charges under the Computer Misuse Act
and the Copyright, Designs and Patents Actand were released on bail.
This obviously has significant implications for both the artists whose
songs were stolen and for the record label that operate underthe Sony
Music umbrella. It's yet unclear which other artists are impacted by
the theft. Hopefully this doesn't mean that these unheard Jackson
tracks remain unheard. We'd certainly like to hearthem – and on a
legitimate release.
