Gas Prices Affect the Coin Market
By Jaime Hernandez
[image]
In the last issue, we asked our readers whether increasing gas prices
have affected their coin purchases. An astonishing 56% of our readers
answered yes! Here in Orange County, gas prices are at about $4.35 per
gallon and in some places it's even higher. Hopefully gas prices come
down so our readers can spend their money on coins rather than
gasoline.

In this week's issue, we have an article discussing Rai Stone coins
which were used over a century ago as currency, and are still being
used in the Island of Yap. Also, the Mint just announced the release
dates for this year's Proof Silver and Gold Eagles, as well as the
Proof Gold Buffaloes.

In our survey, we're asking our readers if they own any Pattern coins.
To answer, scroll to the bottom of this issue of the PCGS eCollector
and click "Yes" or "No."

Stone Money from Yap
By Jaime Hernandez
[image]
Giant doughnut-shaped stone coins standing as high as 12 feet tall and
weighing as much as five tons each are still being used as currency in
some parts of the world. One of these places is the island of Yap. And
one thing is for certain; Yapese people are not shy about showing off
the amount of money they have.

Somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, there is a group of Islands that
belong to Micronesia, where the island of Yap is located. Covering an
area of about 100 square kilometers, these islands are home to about
12,000 people. There are four main languages spoken here (including
English). The people who inhabit these islands are separated into
seven different tribes (or classes) and the color of their coverings
usually indicates which tribe they belong to. Read More...

PCGS CoinFacts 1870-S $1 (Regular Strike)
Since the launch of PCGS CoinFacts,™ we have been hard at work
updating and expanding the site's information. Here's another recent
example:

David Hall: The 1870-S Liberty Seated dollar is one of the most famous
U.S. rarities. There are only 12 known survivors in all grades. The
finest known, and the only Mint State survivor, is the PCGS-graded
MS62 Col. Green-James A. Stack-Legend collection specimen.

P. Scott Rubin: The 1870-S Silver dollar is one of the rarest of all
silver dollars, with less than a dozen examples known (or believed to
exist). Read More...

2012 Proof Silver, Gold Eagles and Proof Buffalo Release Dates
By Jaime Hernandez
[image]
The U.S. Mint has announced that the 2012 Proof Silver Eagles will be
available April 12, 2012. As of this writing, the Mint has still not
provided pricing information; however, this year they will be offering
the coins much earlier than anticipated (and much earlier than they
did last year). In 2011, the Mint released Proof Silver Eagles on June
30. That means the 2012 Proof Silver Eagles will be released about 10
weeks ahead of schedule, compared to last year.

The Mint also announced a release date for the 2012 Proof Gold
Buffaloes. They will be released on March 15, 2012. Read More...
