Community Policing Officers

NHTSA encourages bicycling as an alternative mode of transportation to
motor vehicle travel and encourages the adoption of mutual respect
between motorists and bicyclists to enhance safety for all road users,
including bicyclists. Bicycles on the roadway are, by law, vehicles
with the same rights, and responsibilities as motorized vehicles. Our
bicycle safety programs focus on the behaviors of bicyclists and
motorists towards bicyclists to reduce bicycle injuries and fatalities
on our nation's roadways.
Did you know?
The 630 pedalcyclist deaths in 2009 accounted for 2 percent of all
traffic fatalities during the year.
51,000 pedalcyclists were injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes in
2009Each State should develop and implement a comprehensive bicycle
safety program that promotes safe practices, and educates drivers to
share the roadwith others
Law enforcement agencies can play a very importantrole in this
program, working with engineers, teachers, health advocates and
parents to improve student safety and encourage more physical
activity. The purposeof this website is to give law enforcement more
information about the program and how they can support local SRTS
programs in their community.
Please note: The Role for Law Enforcement in SRTS resource is a
subpage of the National Center's Web site and requires a new browser
window to open.
Authoring Organization: SRTS
Because of your knowledge of local neighborhoodsand training as a
problem solver you will be a valuable member of a local Safe Routes
in your jurisdiction where speeding or other unlawful motorist
behavior is a problem,
Be a SRTS team member by providing needed enforcement operations for
the SRTS program such as speed control
Provide daily or periodic police presence
at identified problem areas(traffic safety or personal securityconcerns)
Get publicity for your activities! This will help raise awareness
about the issues community-wide.
Funding for SRTS projects can come from many different sources. However
one common source of funding is the Federal SRTS program. It is
important to understand that Federal SRTS funds are administered by
each State. To access those funds, you need to learn about your own
State's funding process
Section 402 funding may also be suitable for use for
non-infrastructure related activities, including education and
enforcement. For more informationon Section 402 Legislation, see the
Highway Safety Act of 1966, 23 USC, Chapter 4:
