Announcing the New 2009 HCUP Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS)

The largest national, all-payer emergency department (ED) database in the United States

The database includes information on all visits to the ED, regardless of payer â€" including persons covered by Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, and the uninsured.

The NEDS is nationally representative

Data in the NEDS can be weighted to provide national estimates. The 2009 NEDS includes:

  • Nearly 29 million records weighted to represent approximately 130 million discharges
  • More than 950 hospital-based EDs
  • Data sampled from 29 states that approximates a 20-percent statified sample of U.S. hospital-based EDs

The NEDS is comprehensive

The NEDS can be used to study a variety of topics:

  • ED visits for both common and rare conditions
  • Use of and charges for ED services
  • Differences between treat-and-release visits and those resulting in hospital admission
  • Quality of ED care
  • Access to care
  • Use of health services by special populations

The NEDS data elements include:

  • Principal/primary and secondary ICD-9-CM diagnoses
  • Principal/primary and secondary ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 procedures
  • Discharge status
  • Expected payer, including uninsured
  • Total ED charges (for treat-and-release ED visits) and total inpatient hospital charges (for ED visits that result in admission)
  • Hospital characteristics (e.g., trauma level, teaching status)

The NEDS is user friendly and easy to purchase

The NEDS is affordable and easy to purchase from the HCUP Central Distributor through a simple application process. The 2009 NEDS is provided on CD in ASCII format. A statistical software package (such as SAS, SPSS, or Stata) is recommended for analysis. Programs to load data into software packages are provided.

Price: $500 ($75 for students)
